Towards Reality in Nanoscale Materials VI

Introduction

TRNM VI continues the "Towards Reality in Nanoscale Materials" series. Links to the previous five workshops are in the sidebar. The workshop will be focused on, but not limited to, two-dimensional systems, with thematic sessions on:

The workshop consists of invited and contributed talks as well as posters. Invited and contributed speakers will cover the recent progress in simulations and the relevant experimental areas.

Venue

Hotel

The workshop will be held in Levi, Hotel K5, in Finnish Lapland from Monday Feb 11th to Wednesday 13th (but you may want to stay from Sunday Feb 10th to Thursday Feb 14th). Accommodation will be booked by the organizers for all participants in the conference hotel or other hotels in Levi (Hotel Levitunturi, Hotel Levi Panorama). You will be staying in either a chalet or a normal hotel room.

Levitunturi is a spa hotel 200 m away from the conference site (access to spa is free if you are staying at this hotel). Hotel Levi Panorama is located on top of the mountain, just near the slopes, and it could be a good option for downhill skiers. Note that Levi Panorama is 4 km away from the conference site by road, but there is access by shuttle bus and cable car.

Maps

Check the tourist map of Levi (Hotel K5 is item 3, Levitunturi is item 9, Levi Panorama is item 53) to see what Levi looks like or an interactive map to see where Levi actually is.

Travel - by plane or train

There are flights from Helsinki to the nearby airport of Kittilä by Finnair (every day) and Blue 1 Scheduled buses meet every flight to Kittilä, and it takes about 10-15 minutes to reach Levi. If the flight schedule does not allow you to catch the connecting flight to Kittilä on the same day, you may consider having a stop-over in Helsinki and fly to Kittilä next day. Alternatively, you can fly to Rovaniemi (about 200 km away from Levi), then take a bus (it takes about two and a half hours to reach Levi). You can also rent a car at the Rovaniemi airport and drive to Levi (we guarantee no traffic jams, but there may be reindeer on the road). This could be a good option if several people arrive with the same flight. There are also both day and night trains to Lapland. To reach Levi, one can take the train to Kolari and continue to Levi with a bus.

Leisure

For those interested there are full facilities for both downhill and cross country skiing in Levi, among other winter and indoor sports options.

Weather

The long-time average temperature in Levi in February is about -10 C (15 F). The record high and low temperatures are about +5 and -40 C (+40 and -40 F). The length of day is about 8 hours. In any case, you can expect plenty of snow. Also check the current 5-day forecast for Kittilä. By the way, we have seen northern lights during two of the previous conferences.

Costs

Participation fee

Participation is free. However, the number of participants is limited. If more applications are received than the conference facilities allow, the participants will be chosen based on their abstract and its relevance to the workshop.

Accommodation expenses

The organizers cover in part the accommodation and catering expenses for the participants. That is, hotel accommodation, breakfasts, lunches and workshop dinner in restaurant Saamen kammi are included in the accommodation fee. The precise amount you need to pay for your accommodation depends on the type you choose during registration. The fees range from 50 to 120 e per night, as explained in the registration form. (We do our best but cannot guarantee accommodation in the particular site you choose. However, you will not have to pay extra in the case of a relocation.) The accommodation fee is to be paid by credit card or money transfer. A link to the on-line payment system will be provided later on, along with the payment instructions.

Funding

We thank the following funding agencies for support: CECAM, the National Graduate School in Materials Physics and the National Graduate School in Nanoscience.
