Towards Reality in Nanoscale Materials IX
Nanoscale Materials for Warfare Agent Detection: Nanoscience for Security
February 13th - 16th 2017
Levi, Finland
Introduction
The workshop will be focused on, but not limited to, low-dimensional systems, with thematic sessions on:
- Tools - focused on recently developed methods for nanoscale characterization and integration with bulk materials.
- Applications* - nanoelectronics sensors and systems for enforcing security at borders, airports and transport nodes, catalysis for decontamination of water, land and objects.
- Energy materials - focused on the application of nanoscale investigative techniques, particularly first principles modelling in energy-related research. Including photovoltaics, batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, hydrogen technologies, thermoelectrics, photo- and nanocatalysis, solar power technologies, magnetic refrigeration, and piezoelectric materials.
- Defects - studies of doped and irradiated interfaces and the resultant defect structures. Beyond just studying and understanding the properties of defects and impurities, we wish to explore avenues of atomic scale control: charging; optical excitation; mechanical manipulation. This direction leads to the possibility of tailoring the electronic structure of nanoscale interfaces.
- Transport - studies of the migration of defects, impurities and electrons across interfaces.
- Methods - application of first principles methods to atomistic modeling of non-ideal nanoscale materials. Including advanced approaches for studying excited states and very large systems, and the limits of accuracy in electronic structure calculations.
- Multiscale - approaches to link first principles calculations to larger scale methods, such as kinetic Monte Carlo.
The workshop consists of invited and contributed talks as well as posters. Invited and contributed speakers will cover the recent progress in simulations and the relevant experimental areas. The purpose of this Advanced Research Workshop is to bring together a diverse group of researchers focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology problems that are relevant to chemical defence needs in order to share the state-of-the-art in the field, identify accomplishments and discuss challenges and opportunities.
Please note that the TRNM meeting is under the NATO umbrella and this means that only researchers working in institutions from NATO and NATO partner countries can participate in the event. We are obliged to follow the NATO rules and the countries allowed to participate are shown here. *Participants in this area are encouraged to submit an extended abstract (up to 6 pages) to be published in the Spring Series volume: NATO for Peace and Security - 1: Chemistry and Biology
If you have questions, please also check the frequently asked questions to see if the info you are looking for is already there.

Venue
Hotel
The workshop will be held in Levi, Hotel K5, in Finnish Lapland from Monday Feb 13th to Thursday 16th (the participants are expected to arrive on Sunday 12th). Accommodation will be booked by the organizers for all participants in the conference hotel K5 and Hotel Hullu Poro, which is 800 m away from the conference hotel. You will be staying in either a chalet or a normal hotel room.
Read more about the accommodation here.
Maps
Check the tourist map of Levi (Hotel K5 is item 3, Levitunturi is item 9) to see what Levi looks like or an interactive map to see where Levi actually is.
Travel - by plane or train
There are flights from Helsinki to the nearby airport of Kittilä by Finnair (several every day), SAS and low-coster Norwegian airlines (not every day, though). Note that some Finnair flights stop in Ivalo on its way to Kittilä, but you do not leave the airplane. You will see, however, an extra leg when booking — do not pay attention to this. There are also some direct flights from European cities to Kittilä e.g. Munich, that can be considered. There are 5-6 direct Finnair flights Helsinki - Kittilä per day. You may also consider staying overnight in Helsinki and continue on Monday morning.
Scheduled buses meet every flight to Kittilä, and it takes about 20 minutes to reach Levi. You can also take a taxi (15 min), and if several people share it, the price will essentially be the same as for the bus ride. If the flight schedule does not allow you to catch the connecting flight to Kittilä on the same day, you may consider having a stop-over in Helsinki and fly to Kittilä next day. Alternatively, you can fly to Rovaniemi (about 200 km away from Levi), then take a bus (it takes about two and a half hours to reach Levi). You can also rent a car at the Rovaniemi airport and drive to Levi (we guarantee no traffic jams, but there may be reindeer on the road). This could be a good option if several people arrive with the same flight. There are also both day and night trains to Lapland (book early!). To reach Levi, one can take the train to Kolari and continue to Levi with a bus.
Leisure
For those interested there are full facilities for both downhill and cross country skiing in Levi, among other winter and indoor sports options.
Weather
The long-time average temperature in Levi in February is about -10 C (15 F). The record high and low temperatures are about +5 and -40 C (+40 and -40 F). The length of day is about 8 hours. In any case, you can expect plenty of snow. Also check the current 5-day forecast for Kittilä. By the way, we have seen northern lights during about 40% of the previous conferences.
Costs
Participation fee
Participation is free. However, the number of participants is limited. If more applications are received than the conference facilities allow, the participants will be chosen based on their abstract and its relevance to the workshop topics.
Accommodation expenses
Hotel accommodation, breakfasts, lunches and workshop dinner in restaurant Saamen Kammi are included in the accommodation fee (5 nights + 5 breakfasts + 4 lunches + 1 banquet + many coffees). If you stay less than 5 nights, payment for the exact number of nights (120 e per night) is possible, provided that you stay in a hotel room. Note that the number of rooms is limited. The accommodation fee is to be paid by credit card or money transfer. A link to the on-line payment system will be provided later on, along with the payment instructions.
- shared room in a skiing house (chalet): 360 e
- own room in a skiing house (chalet): 550 e
- own hotel room: own hotel room (5 nights): 670 e
- own hotel room: 120 e/night + 70 e for banquet
How to choose your accommodation?
Cancellation policy
All the participants must pay the accommodation fee before the deadline to guarantee participation in the workshop.
In exceptional circumstances, we can try to refund the accommodation fee after payment, but generally this is not possible due to the nature of the contract we have with the hotels.
